Overview
Located in the Lovedale region of the Lower Hunter Valley, 201 is a small privately-owned vineyard with a vision of crafting an elegant range of boutique wines. When first established in the early 1990's under the label “Rothbury Ridge”, the original owners sought to create premium wines from grape varietals which were unique to the region, yet perfectly matched to the Hunter Valley climate. The result was small plantings of Chambourcin and Durif in 1994 and 1995 respectively. With new ownership in 2006 and a desire to stay true to it's regional identity, the current proprietors Barbara Smith and Geoff Schippers added new plantings of Semillon, a Hunter Valley staple, to the estate. However, the pioneering spirit has not been lost, and further trials of new grape varietals are planned over the coming years in the hope of discovering new and exciting styles which can lay claim to being the future of Hunter Valley wines. The first of these is a small parcel of Barbera, due for it's inaugural harvest in 2012. Since it's relaunch in 2009, and in conjunction with viticulturalist Graham Doran and winemaker Scott Stephens, the 201 team can proudly lay claim to being awarded a medal for every wine we have ever produced - in fact, we've received 19 medals in total in just our first two vintages!
